Research and Planning - Good vs Bad Trailer Examples

This is England

This is England is a good example of a Social realist trailer as it uses a good location and it is the sort of location my group are wanting to use. It gets straight to the point by showing the main character - a troubled boy. It tells us straight away within the first 30 seconds that he is getting bullied for his trousers. We then see him getting into a fight and getting into all sorts of mischief as he makes new friends. We see him confess that he like a girl and then they are holding hands. Then we see him break the law by shoplifting which is something expected within a social realist trailer. It has given my group ideas for our trailer as we are going to stick to the breaking the law theme by doing ours based on drugs and law breaking.

This is a bad example trailer for my group to look at because the location is somewhere abroad called Costa Del Sol which is in Spain and we wont be able to use a setting like this. We are going to stick to the traditional council estate if possible so it will put across the genre throughout the clip. We were also thinking about using younger actors that are in their teens rather than adults which are used in this film. This is because we think younger people might relate to our trailer more as teenagers go through a lot.

Research and Planning - Guide for game developers

Guide for Game Developers

Age ratings are systems used to ensure that entertainment content, such as films, videos, DVDs, and computer games, are clearly labelled by age according to the content they contain. Age ratings provide guidance to consumers (particularly parents) to help them decide whether or not to buy a particular product
The rating on a game confirms that it is suitable for players over a certain age. Accordingly, a PEGI 7 game is only suitable for those aged seven and above and an PEGI 18 game is only suitable for adults aged eighteen and above. The PEGI rating considers the age suitability of a game, not the level of difficulty. Every game has a Certificate.

PEGI 3
The content of games given this rating is considered suitable for all age groups. Some violence in a comical context (typically Bugs Bunny or Tom & Jerry cartoon-like forms of violence) is acceptable. The child should not be able to associate the character on the screen with real life characters, they should be totally fantasy. The game should not contain any sounds or pictures that are likely to scare or frighten young children. No bad language should
be heard.

PEGI 7
Any game that would normally be rated at 3 but contains some possibly frightening scenes or sounds may be considered suitable in this category.

PEGI 12
Videogames that show violence of a slightly more graphic nature towards fantasy character and/or non graphic violence towards human-looking characters or recognisable animals, as well as videogames that show nudity of a slightly more graphic nature would fall in this age category. Any bad language in this category must be mild and fall short of sexual expletives.

PEGI 16
This rating is applied once the depiction of violence (or sexual activity) reaches a stage that looks the same as would be expected in real life. More extreme bad language, the concept of the use of tobacco and drugs and the depiction of criminal activities can be content of games that are rated 16.

PEGI 18
The adult classification is applied when the level of violence reaches a stage where it becomes a depiction of gross violence and/or includes elements of specific types of violence. Gross violence is the most difficult to define since it can be very subjective in many cases, but in general terms it can be classed as the depictions of violence that would make the viewer feel a sense of revulsion.

Research and Planning - Audience Theory

Why do audiences choose to consume certain texts?

  • Something that they relate to
  • Something that they like
Harry Potter - Cinema
Primary Audience: age 8-16
Working/Middle class
Educated
Literate

Secondary Audience: Parents, All ages
Middle class
Income

Three theories
  • The effects model or hypodermic model
  • Uses Gratification model
  • reception theory
Effect model - consumption of media texts has effect or influence on the audience. Passive, Powerless to prevent influence, negative
Power lies with message of text e.g. Disney films

Hypodermic model - Message in media text interjected into audience by powerful syringe like media. Audience powerless to resist. Media works like drug, audience drugged, addicted, doped or duped e.g. Shrek

Effects model endence - Frankfurt school - theorised in 1920s and 30s mass media acted to restrict and control audience to the benefit of corporate capitalism and governments.

The Bobo doll experiment - Controversial piece of research that apparently proved that children copy violent behaviour.

Moral panic

Hypodermic needle theory - one example gets everyone talking about it.

Gratifications model
  • Buy into it
  • Unclear theres a link between consumption of violent and behaviour
  • Uses of gratification is opposite of effect model
  • Power lies with the audience not the producers
  • What audience does with media texts , how they use them, free to reject, use or play with media meaning or how they see fit
  • Audiences therefore use media texts to gratify needs for Diversion, Escapism, Information, Pleasure, Comparing relationships and Lifestyles with ones own and Sexual stimulation.
  • The audience is in control and consumption of the media helps people with issues such as: Learning, Emotional satisfaction, Relaxation, Helping issues of Personal identity, Helping issues of Social identity, help with issues of Aggression and Violence.
  • Suggests consumption of violent images can be helpful
Insidious - Hypodermic needle effect. Music- calm before the storm. Nuclear family going to stay at grandmas. Red tint on baby, Then low key after. Cutaways, Tags in the middle

Research and Planning - Film Classification

For our film we have decided we are going to make sure it is rated a 15 as we think that 15 year olds and older will be able to relate to it more. However this means we will have to be careful that everything is suitable for 15 year olds.

Research and Planning - Trailer Analysis

.This is England

The first trailer I am analysing is This is England which came out in April 2007 in the UK but is set in 1983 and is about a troubled boy growing up in England. It was Directed by Shane Meadows and was rated an 18. I think looking at this trailer will help me to produce my Trailer.

The Genre is Social Realism. As it includes offensive jokes and violence it has a certificate of 18. This is probably so younger people don't get influenced by the bad behaviour involved in it.

It starts off with film company names, then it shows an award its won. Then we meet the main character who is walking home from school and we see his mum who asks if he had a good day at school we then see Shaun throwing his jacket on the floor we then see shot reverse shot as his mum asks what's wrong. Then it fades to black and then we see Shaun sat on the sofa with his mum telling her about getting picked on because of his trousers. Then it shows us a clip of him getting picked on and Shaun runs at the lad and push him over.

We then get told that its set in England in 1983 and then it fast cuts through a montage of different clips including someone solving a rubix cube and Prince Charles and Dianna walking down the aisle. While this is happening there is some music being played over the top which Is quite up beat. We then see Shaun and his mum talking about his dad and Shaun looks sad.

We then see text on the screen saying 'Shaun went looking for a friend' and a clip follows showing Shaun looking for a friend and he's sat with a group of people and shakes one of their hands. Then we see more text saying 'He found a family' where we see him getting his hair cut and put on a different style of clothing to what he was originally wearing. We then see a little montage of clips where he is with his friends and then it goes to him and a girl alone and he asks her to be his girlfriend we then see them both walking and holding hands and then he's with more people and he tells them he's had the best day of his life. His mum then meets his new friends and says thanks as they helped with the bullying at school. She also tells them that 'the hair is not good' to which Shaun bursts out laughing. One of his friends then introduces him to another person and then we see text on the screen telling us who directed the film. The new person he was introduced to is then talking to Shaun telling him no one has ever taken a swing at him like that. Shaun is then seen in the shop asking for whiskey and larger to which the shop keeper picks him up and that's when the new person comes in and rescues Shaun by telling the shopkeeper to 'Get your hands off him now' while pointing a sword at him we then see Shaun with his hands full of stuff from the shop. There is then a montage of clips of his friends all showing bad behaviour such as fighting and vandalising walls with spray-paint. In the middle of this we see Shaun on the floor crying and then straight after someone stamping on someone. It then goes black before showing his mum asking him if he's ok, before going to a shot of him and his friends walking along with some more awards appearing on the screen and some emotional music playing over it. It also has a montage of random clips from the film with more awards and reviews over the top before a shot of Shaun with a sad looking face and the title and then the ending screen with lots of writing of companies and names and a website.
The audience is probably aimed at older teenagers and young adults as they might be able to relate to it
more.

The mise en scene starts off with a beach and then fades to the boy walking along next to a shop we then see him in his kitchen and his mum in the living room and then he joins her. We then see him in a playground with some lads who he then tackles one of them to the floor. He is then in a tunnel that has graffiti on the walls with some people who become his friends who then shave his hair in a room. We then see him in his town which is a bit scruffy looking with his friends messing around. He is then in a room with a girl who he asks to be his girlfriend and are then seen out on the streets holding hands. We also see him sat in a car which is very low key lit and then it moves on to a building which could possibly be a cafe and his mum turns up and meets his friends. He is then seen in a house with lots of people before going into a shop and asking for alcohol.

Shifty

This trailer is for a Social Realism film and starts off with a warning about containing strong language and violence. It then has a shot of the company name 'Metrodome'. Then we see a shot of someone opening a door and then a shot reverse shot between the guy who knocked on the door and the guy who opened it. We then see them hugging before cutting to a close up on some sausages frying in  a pan before going to a mid shot of the guy cooking them. We then see shot reverse shot as the two guys talk. Then it goes to a shot of one of them kneeling down rummaging in a bag before going to an establishing shot of where its set and then to a shot of them both outside someone's flat where it has a close up of a cat on the door. It then uses fast cutting of shots of handing something to someone and a woman smoking, then a guy kicking a stuffed cat. Then we see the two men walking and talking about 'selling crack to miss marple' before getting chased by an undercover police car it shows them running and then both of them stopped out of breath and then they walk around again and deal some drugs we then see someone pour a bowl full of a white substance out onto a table and then another person sniffing something which we presume is the substance. Then we see two guys having an argument and then it cuts to someone passing something to another person while sat in a car before skipping to a girl lying down and a guy sat next to her on the phone saying 'it's getting out of hand'. We then see a quote come on the screen saying how its good before a clip ofa guy taking something apart and then shouting. Then we see another quote about the film before a clip of some guys shouting st one another and then another quote before we see someone putting stuff down the toilet to get rid of it then we see clips of weapons such as knives and guns and a title shot at the end.
The audience is probably Teenagers and Adults.

Research and Planning - Social Realism

We have decided to do a Social Realist trailer as its a bit different. However I dont know much about this genre so I will need to do research and look into it more. I might have to watch some films in this genre to get a feel for what its like and give me ideas for my trailer.

Research and Planning - Photoshop challenge film poster

This is a refresher that we did in class to see what we can remember about photoshop.
